Free Pattern: Fine Merino Shell
This is
a good opportunity to try your hand with the ultra fine yarn and
needles. Be patient, once you have 6 or 8 rows to hold onto, it gets
easier.
You will need a spool of 2/28 Ultra Fine Merino, 3 stitch
holders (safety pins), 3 buttons and a pair of size #00000
needles.
The directions are for the 15-16" size. Use the numbers
in parentheses for the 11.5" size.
Gauge: 20 sts = 1", 22 rows = 1"
Wind off about 20 yards of yarn onto another spool and set aside.
Front Cast on 50 (36) sts. Work in K1, P1 ribbing for 6
(4) rows. K the next row, Increasing 10 (6) sts evenly spaced across
the row. P 1 row. Continue in stockinette stitch for 50 (36) rows, or
until the piece measures 2 1/2" (1 3/4") from the beginning. Bind off 3
(2) sts at the beginning of the next 2 rows. Decrease 1 st at each
edge on the next 2 (1) K rows. 50 (36) sts remain. Continue for 29
(21) rows. Next row, K20 (14), place the next 10 (6) sts on a holder,
attach the other spool of yarn and K20 (14). Continue with 2 spools and
P 1 row. *K 1 row, decreasing 1 st at each neck edge. P 1 row* twice
(once). Bind off 5 (4) sts at the beginning of the next 6 rows and
decrease one st at each neck edge on the K rows 3 (1) times. All will
be bound off.
Back Work the same as the Front until the piece measures 2 1/4" (1
1/2") from the beginning. Next row, K28 (19), cast on 4, attach the
second spool of yarn and K32 (23). P 29 (20) K3, K3, P29 (20). Work 4
rows, continuing to K the 3 sts at each side of the back opening edge on
the P rows. Bind off 3 (2) sts at the beginning of the next 2 rows.
Decrease 1 st at each edge on the next 2 (1) K rows. 27 (20) sts
remain in each section. Work 4 rows. Make a buttonhole on the next two
rows: K27 (20), K2, bind off 2, K23 (16). P23 (16), cast on 2, K2, K3,
K24 (17). Continue for 27 (17) rows, making another buttonhole on rows
14 and 15 (12 and 13). K18 (14) place 9 (6) sts on a holder, K27 (20).
P18 (14), place 9 (6) sts on a holder, P18 (14). Bind off 5 (4) sts at
the beginning of the next 6 rows and decrease 1 st at each neck edge on
the K rows 3 (2) times. All will be bound off.
Block the pieces and sew the shoulder and side seams. Block the seams.
Tack the right back opening band in place behind the left band.
Neckband: Starting at the left back neck edge, K the 9 (6) sts from the
holder, pick up and K12 (8) sts to the front holder, K the 10 (6) sts
from the holder, pick up and K 12 (8) sts to the holder, K the 9 (6) sts
from the holder, 52 (34) sts. Work in K1, P1 ribbing for 5 (3) rows.
For the 15-16" size: Next row, *(K1, P1) 4 times, slip 1, K2tog, psso,
(P1, K1) 4 times, slip 1, K2tog, psso* 2 times, (K1, P1) 4 times. 44
sts remain.
For the 11.5" size: *(K1, P1) 2 times, K1, slip 1,
K2tog, psso* 3 times, (K1, P1) 2 times, K1. 28 sts remain.
Work
in K1, P1 ribbing for 9 (6) rows, making a buttonhole on rows 2 and 3.
Bind off in ribbing. Block the neckband. Sew the buttons to the right
back opening band.
